New York Avenue NE — Red Line + CSX overpass

Safety: goodoverlook

Washington, DC

WMATACSXAmtrak

Access & safety

Public access

Public sidewalks along New York Avenue NE and the cross streets (M St NE, Brentwood Rd) give views of three rail corridors: the WMATA Red Line surface trackage, CSX's Capital Sub freight mainline, and the NEC Amtrak trackage. The NoMa-Gallaudet U Metro station has elevated platform views.

Safety notes

Stay on public sidewalks. The CSX ROW fences are real boundaries — do not cross them. NoMa is a developed neighborhood but situational awareness still recommended after dark.

Parking

Street parking in NoMa (mostly metered, 2-hour limits). NoMa-Gallaudet U Metro station is the recommended access.

Best time of day

Morning for east-facing freight; afternoon for the NEC. CSX freight density picks up overnight (not for casual railfans).

Train frequency

High — Red Line every 4-12 minutes, CSX Capital Sub freight 15-30 trains/day, NEC Amtrak passes between MARC + Acela schedules.

Nearby

Union Market (food hall), restaurants throughout NoMa, restrooms in retail establishments.

For the parent, spouse, or friend along for the ride — restrooms, food, and what to do while your railfan watches trains.
