Access & safety

Public access

Platform access requires a same-day ticket on any Amtrak, MARC, or VRE train. Once on the platform, you can photograph trains at the bumper-post end and along the platform edge. The Amtrak Acela maintenance / layover area is visible from the north end of the platforms but is private.

Safety notes

Stay behind the yellow line — Acela approaches at speed. Acela layover operations sometimes use mid-platform tracks. Do not cross to non-public platforms. Amtrak Police patrol all platforms.

Parking

Same as main hall — Union Station garage or transit.

Best time of day

Late afternoon for sunlight through the train shed; the platforms run roughly N-S so morning eastern light and evening western light both work.

Train frequency

Same as main hall — extremely high. The bumper-post end shows simultaneous trains during rush hour.

Nearby

All concourse amenities are 1-2 minutes walk back into the station.

For the parent, spouse, or friend along for the ride — restrooms, food, and what to do while your railfan watches trains.
